The FluxBEATS summer school, held from September 9 to 16, 2025, in the town of Selfoss in southern Iceland was a combination of training and learning about Icelandic geology. Iceland was chosen for its accessible and visible processes related to divergent plate boundaries, which are central to FluxBEATS doctoral projects.

In this newsletter, we are sharing the highlights of the summer school!

We are excited to announce the launch of the FluxBEATS (Fluxes at Divergent Plate Boundary Environments Analyzed in Time and Space) doctoral training network funded by the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

The network started on the 1st of November 2024, it comprises of seven academic beneficiaries, and ten associated academic and non-academic partners .

The FluxBEATS doctoral training network will investigate global elemental fluxes that control the biogeochemical cycles and formation of the mineral deposits at divergent plate boundaries. It is at the forefront of current fundamental research on the processes involved in the formation of seabed and on-land resources. The projects will focus on the magmatic, hydrothermal and biological processes from the mantle through the crust to the hydrosphere, and from the Archean to the present.

FluxBEATS is designed to provide doctoral candidates excellent professional and personal training in environmental and analytical geosciences. This includes state-of-the-art field, analytical, modelling and software techniques, and soft skills such as effective dissemination, exploitation, and outreach.

FluxBEATS is funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
